Back in Middelburg, phew.
The book chosen was Diary of a Nobody by George and Weedon Grossmith . George wrote and Weedon illustrated this delightful book. It’s very rare to read an adult book accompanied by illustrations these days but I for one am grateful to Grossmith frère for his work, even if one of his acutely observed pen and inks did make me laugh so much that I squirted my bedtime tea through my nose. It was written in the Victorian age but seems to belong to a slightly later time, and has more in common with Jerome K. Jerome than Charles Dickens.
The book takes the form of a diary written by Mr. Henry Pooter and contains a whole host of characters with well chosen names, Lupin Pooter, his son, Mr. Cummings and Mr. Gowings his frequent friends, and a Mr. Murray Posh to name but a few. Sadly lacking in humour, but convinced that he is in fact a hilarious wit, Pooter recounts daily incidents and recalls with an indignant tone, perceived insults and incidents of bad service in the manner of a latterday and more likeable Victor Meldrew.
We could all, on reviewing the book recognize many of our own traits and empathise with certain characters, even owning up to our own Pooterish moments.
We gave it 5/5.
If you have read the book and would like to express your opinions on any of the above points, or any other aspect of the book, please post your comments below.
We’d love to hear from you.
